Connectivity by hitch-hiking

A ride-share service for bytes

Thummer lets devices that have no internet connection (sensors, meters, trackers) send small messages to the cloud by hitching a ride on phones that happen to pass by. The message travels encrypted the whole way, and a receipt comes back to say it arrived.

The journey of a cargo A rider device advertises its cargo over Bluetooth LE. A nearby driver picks it up and delivers it over the internet to the Thummer cloud, which queues it for the consumer the rider addressed. A signed delivery receipt travels back to the rider through any driver. Rider IoT sensor or device makes encrypted cargo Driver phone passing by carries it, can't read it Thummer cloud authenticates, limits, queues and counts Consumer your app or cloud fetches its messages Bluetooth LE HTTPS queue signed delivery receipt, carried back by any driver

Three ways to take part

Every message is a cargo. Riders create it, drivers carry it, consumers receive it, and the Thummer cloud keeps it all honest.

Rider

An endpoint device with something to say and no internet to say it with. It encrypts a small message and advertises it over Bluetooth for the next driver to pick up.

Driver

Anyone with a Thummer account and a phone. The driver app notices nearby riders, picks up their cargo and delivers it to the cloud. Drivers carry cargo they can't read.

Consumer

The app or cloud a rider's messages are meant for. It has its own consumer ID, fetches its cargo from the Thummer queue, and can ask riders to seal messages so only it can read them.
